Mixtures II
2015
Whereas the album Mixtures showcases organ music from the 20th and 21st century, Mixtures II offers a compilation of organ compositions written solely by Maryliz Smith.
Recorded on two very different instruments, one at First United Methodist Church in Ft. Collins, Colorado, and the other at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California, Maryliz invites listeners to expand their perspective on how the organ has often been perceived—a distant “disembodied entity,” hidden and mysterious—to an instrument in an ensemble that includes the organ, the audience, the building in which the organ is housed, and the organist herself.
The scope of these pieces is wide ranging. From the intimate sounds at the beginning of “Hearthfire” to the majestic, sonic range of “Ancient Rite,” the music attempts to speak to universal themes, using the organ as the instrument conveying the subject at hand.
