Listening Between the Worlds

This album is a collaboration with cellist Ariel Barnes, who is described as creating a “mesmerizing musical experience” by combining his “deep personal connection” (Toronto Live Music Report), and “luscious tone and technical prowess” (The Vancouver Sun). Ariel has been hailed as “truly an inspiring artist… the outstanding Canadian cellist of his generation.” (Maestro Bramwell Tovey).

Listening Between the Worlds attempts to direct the attention of the audience to their imagination in “the space between”, wherein resides unexpected occurrences and possibilities. The show itself weaves a tapestry of poetic stories based on true events. The collection of both familiar classical pieces, which include Ludovico Einaudi, Olivier Messiaen, and Arvo Pärt, is coupled with original compositions based on improvisations by some of Maryliz’s students. With permission granted from her students, Maryliz then expanded the improvisations into pieces for cello and piano.

The album is designed for the listener to experience only the musical performances of Maryliz and Ariel. The stories are available upon request.
