Maryliz Smith

By the age of 5 Maryliz was playing the piano. She waited, not so patiently, to grow enough for her legs to touch the pedals of a pipe organ. By the age of 13 she was being groomed as a concert organist, attending Interlochen Arts Academy during her high school years and later, with a master's in performance, being mentored by Gillian Weir, Marie-Claire Alain and Roberta Gary.

A strong advocate for the pipe organ, when Maryliz performs she often changes people's perspective about this instrument, which is so often associated with churches and scary movies. Maryliz guides audiences into a complex and versatile sonic language that only this instrument can realize. She invites listeners into a mesmerizing experience, shifting their focus from her technical prowess to the experience of having been met in a universal space that is familiar to all of us.
